Night City
"Night City. A place that chews you up and spits you out. But you keep coming back. We all do."
Overview
Night City is an independent city-state located on the coast of Northern California between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Founded in the 1990s by corporate visionary Richard Night, it was meant to be a utopia — a city free of crime, poverty and corruption. Night was assassinated before his dream could be realized. The city that bears his name became everything he feared.
By 2076 Night City is a sprawling megalopolis of six million souls packed into a neon-drenched coastal strip between the Pacifica Badlands and the cold grey Pacific. It is officially an independent city-state, beholden to no nation. In practice it is owned — district by district, block by block — by whoever is strong enough to hold it.
The megacorps loom over everything. Their towers pierce the smogline above City Center. Their security forces patrol the streets they care about and ignore the rest. The NCPD does what it can — which is never enough. Beyond the thin blue line the gangs hold court, the fixers broker deals in the shadows, and Edgerunners hustle to survive another day in the city that eats its own.
Night City does not sleep. Night City does not forgive. Night City does not forget.
But people keep coming anyway. Because Night City is the only place left where anyone can become anything — if they're willing to pay the price.
Districts
City Center
The gleaming corporate heart of Night City. Glass towers and armored plazas rising above the smog. This is where the real power lives — behind security checkpoints, biometric scanners and walls of corporate lawyers.
- Corporations: Arasaka, Militech, Biotechnica, Petrochem, Trauma Team
- Gangs: Corporate security forces operate as de facto gang presence. Street gangs rarely survive long here.
- Notable Areas: Arasaka Tower, Corpo Plaza, Memorial Park
Watson
Once an Arasaka corporate zone, Watson fell into disrepair after the Night City Holocaust and never fully recovered. Now it is a dense patchwork of immigrant communities, black market bazaars, rundown apartment blocks and gang turf. It is loud, crowded, dangerous and alive in a way the corporate districts never are.
- Corporations: Arasaka (reduced presence), Zetatech, Trauma Team
- Gangs: Maelstrom (dominant — control Northside Industrial), Tyger Claws (Kabuki), Mox (Kabuki outskirts)
- Notable Areas: Kabuki, Northside Industrial District, Little China, Totentanz
Westbrook
Westbrook is Night City's playground for those with eddies to burn. Japantown pulses with neon and night life. Charter Hill is home to corporate middle management living behind gated communities. North Oak is old money, private security and silence. The Tyger Claws run Japantown like their personal kingdom and everyone else pays tribute or pays the price.
- Corporations: Arasaka, Kang Tao, Trauma Team
- Gangs: Tyger Claws (dominant throughout Westbrook), Animals (Japantown underground fighting circuits)
- Notable Areas: Japantown, Charter Hill, North Oak, Cloud
Heywood
Heywood is the largest district in Night City by population. A sprawling mix of corporate suburbs in the north and gang-controlled streets in the south. The Valentinos own the cultural heart of Heywood — their Latino heritage woven into every mural, every lowrider, every shrine to Santa Muerte on a street corner. The deeper south bleeds into The Glen where The 6th Street gang pushes its NUSA patriotism at gunpoint.
- Corporations: Militech, Trauma Team, Various corporate residential presence
- Gangs: Valentinos (dominant — Vista Del Rey, Wellsprings), 6th Street (The Glen), Wraiths (Badlands border)
- Notable Areas: Vista Del Rey, Wellsprings, The Glen, Corporate Suburbia
Santo Domingo
The industrial engine of Night City. Power plants, factories, refineries and the workers who keep them running packed into cramped housing blocks. Santo Domingo is where the city's electricity comes from and where the 6th Street gang waves its NUSA flags loudest. Arroyo is a blue collar warzone. Rancho Coronado is suburban sprawl trying and failing to be respectable.
- Corporations: Petrochem, Militech, Zetatech
- Gangs: 6th Street (dominant throughout), Valentinos (border areas)
- Notable Areas: Arroyo, Rancho Coronado, Power Plants, Industrial Zones
Pacifica
Pacifica was meant to be Night City's crown jewel — a luxury resort district to rival anything in the world. The corps pulled their funding before it was finished and left behind half-built hotels, crumbling boardwalks and a community abandoned by everyone. The Voodoo Boys moved in and made it their own. Pacifica is now a no-go zone for NCPD, corps and anyone who doesn't have business there. The NET runs strange in Pacifica. The Blackwall feels closer here than anywhere else in the city.
- Corporations: No significant corporate presence. Corps abandoned Pacifica entirely.
- Gangs: Voodoo Boys (dominant — fierce territorial control), Animals (Coastview)
- Notable Areas: Coastview, West Wind Estate, Grand Imperial Mall, Combat Zone
The Badlands
Beyond Night City's walls lies the Badlands — a vast stretch of scrubland, desert highway and industrial wasteland stretching out from the city in every direction. This is Nomad territory. Clan convoys roll through on routes that have been theirs for generations. Militech patrols the highways looking for smugglers. The bones of the old world bleach in the California sun. The Badlands are dangerous but they are also free in a way Night City never is. Some people come out here and never go back.
- Corporations: Militech (highway patrols and convoy operations), Petrochem (refinery and extraction sites)
- Gangs: Wraiths (raider clan — hostile to all), Aldecaldos (Nomad clan — honorable), Bakkers (Nomad clan)
- Notable Areas: Nomad Camps, Rocky Ridge, Laguna Bend, Biotechnica Flats, Wraith Territory
Dogtown
Dogtown is Night City's dirty secret. Officially it doesn't exist — a cordoned-off district carved out of Pacifica after the Unification War when NUSA General Kurt Hansen and his Barghest military faction refused to stand down. Hansen sealed the district behind military checkpoints and turned it into his personal fiefdom. The NCPD can't go in. The corps won't go in officially. But the black market inside Dogtown is the best in Night City and if you know the right people — and have the eddies — you can get anything in there. Anything at all.
- Corporations: No official presence. Black market operations connect to nearly every corp off the books.
- Gangs: Barghest (absolute military control under Kurt Hansen), Various black market operators
- Notable Areas: Stadium Black Market, Longshore Stacks, EBM Petrochem Stadium, Heavenly Pod Apartments
The Law in Night City
The Night City Police Department (NCPD) is officially responsible for law enforcement across the city. In practice their reach is limited, their resources stretched and their officers underpaid. Corporate zones are policed by private security. Gang territories are policed by the gangs themselves. The Badlands belong to whoever has the most guns that day.
Trauma Team International provides emergency medical extraction — for subscribers only. If you don't have a Trauma Team card and you go down in a firefight, you're on your own.
There is no justice in Night City. There is only power and the lack of it.
