= Tech =

Birds fly, fish swim, shit breaks. That is just a fact of life and Techs are the people you bring said broken shit too. Leave a busted Agent, a dead Metrocar, or a jammed pistol next to one for more than five minutes and it's already halfway disassembled on the bench, getting rebuilt into something better than it was. Techs are the why the average person can afford a car(used sure but a car), They are the reason why the airships stay up in the sky and are deeply necessary at every level of society. That also means that techs need to work with the scraps of the time of the red more than they would like to keep all this stuff working. Fine a 30 year old military drone? Tech will fix it, Need that bizarre laser weapon recovered from a Arasaka basement firing? Tech is on it! Spill synth coffee on your air fryer? Time to call the tech!

__TOC__

== History ==

Before the War, keeping the world running was somebody else's job. Factories built things. Warranties covered things. If your car broke, a dealership fixed it, and if your cyberware glitched, a corporate clinic handled the recall. That world burned along with everything else during the Fourth Corporate War, and it never came back, not really. Parts of it did if you have the money and live in a nice safe corporate zone.

What's left for everyone else is a world that runs on improvisation. Parts don't ship on time, if they ship at all. A new appliance from the factory might be months out, assuming the local megaplex bothers to buy one. Into that gap stepped the Techs: mechanics, tinkerers, cyberware jockeys, and self-taught inventors who figured out that the person who can fix the unfixable will never be short of work. Some trained formally at a college or with a corp and adapted. Most didn't. Most learned the same way everyone learns anything on the street, by taking something apart, breaking it worse, and figuring out how to put it back together anyway.

The trade splits along a line every Tech eventually has to choose a side of. There's the honest work: patching up blenders, tuning Metrocars, keeping a neighborhood's Agents online. It pays the rent, and it makes a Tech a fixture in their block the way a good doctor or a good bartender is. Then there's the serious money: illegal weapons, stolen or black-market cybertech, corporate espionage gear, counter-surveillance rigs built for people who very much do not want to be found. A Tech who's good enough to work that side of the street eats well. They also usually end up targets for their tech stashes, which is why the good ones spend as much on defending their workshop as they do stocking it.

== Role Ability: Maker ==

A Tech's defining skill is called Maker. It covers everything from a quick roadside repair to inventing something that has never existed before. In practice, that means four overlapping talents that most Techs draw from constantly:

* '''Field work''' &mdash; the instinct for triage. A Tech with a strong field hand can jury-rig almost anything back to working order on the spot, holding together with tape, wire, and stubbornness long enough to get through the job. It never lasts forever, and a good Tech always knows exactly how long they've got before it falls apart again.
* '''Upgrading''' &mdash; taking something that already works and making it better. Tightening tolerances, adding capacity, adding a flamethrower, or turning an ordinary piece of gear into something a step above what it left the factory as.
* '''Fabrication''' &mdash; building an item from raw parts and salvage rather than buying it off a shelf. Cheaper than retail if you know where to source materials, and the only option at all for gear that isn't legally sold anywhere.
* '''Invention''' &mdash; the rarest and most respected of the four. Designing something genuinely new: an upgrade nobody's built before, or a piece of equipment that doesn't have a name yet. Every custom rig, one-of-a-kind weapon mod, or legendary piece of black-market hardware in Night City started as somebody's invention.

== Famous Techs ==

'''Torch''' (Joao "Torch" Barbosa Alves) runs Torch's Total Repairs out of the Watson neighborhood, and by most accounts has never once turned away a job, no matter how strange the item on his bench. He's the kind of Tech every block in the City wishes it had: reliable, a little sarcastic, and never quite explaining where he learned to fix half the things he fixes.

== Tools of the Trade ==

A Tech's workshop says everything about how they operate and who they work for. THe tools they use can also tell a lot about the background and specialty of the different types of Techs.

'''Street tinkerer:''' a folding table, a toolbox, and whatever parts didn't get scavenged before they got there first. Street Tinkerers fix what their neighborhood can afford: Agents, kitchen appliances, the occasional pistol. The margins are thin, but the trust runs deep, and a good tinkerer is treated like family by everyone on their block.

'''Mechanic:''' an actual storefront, a regular supplier, and a client list that includes local gangs, Nomad Packs, and Solos who need their vehicles(and other tools) kept in fighting shape. A mechanic is going to be close to the local nomad community and in some cases with street gangs, you know for when your cars serial number mysteriously doesnt match your paperwork.
''"Technology's the lifeblood of this City and me? I'm the beating heart keeping it flowing. At least in this neighborhood."''<br>&mdash; Joao "Torch" Barbosa Alves
